All the volunteers of Vibha in Atlanta are saddened by the sudden demise of Sumati Mahajan on March 6, 2007.

Sumatiji (as we fondly called her) has been a part of our volunteer family for more than ten years! She attended Vibha's very first volunteer meeting in June 1996, and was deeply involved in all subsequent Vibha fundraising efforts in Atlanta. She had strong dedication and commitment to the cause and was unrelenting in her efforts.

Inspite of the age difference between her and all other volunteers, she was always there for everything. All of us will deeply miss her warm and cheerful interactions.

She also volunteered passionately for the Indian Classical Music Society and several other community organizations.

Sumatiji is survived by her daugher, son-in-law and two grand daughters. We express our heartfelt condolenses to her family.

Sumatiji - We will miss you.

The Family of Sumati Mahajan has requested her well wishers to make a donation to Vibha, in lieu of flowers. Please click below to make a donation and importantly please indicate on the donation page (in the 'Comments' section) that you are making this donation in Sumati Mahajan's memory.

Sreekanth Pannala

Sumatiji is an amazing person whom I had the privilege to know for over ten years. She has been one of the pillar stones for Vibha Atlanta and contributed to the growth of the chapter over the decade she has been involved. She never hesitated in taking up new challenges even though she has single handedly managed all the accounts for the chapter from very much the beginning. She has been always cheerful, enthusiastic and constant inspiration for me and many other volunteers. She will live among us, seeing us through growth of Vibha to new heights where we can continue her dreams to reach out to more needy children. I am going to miss her presence in this world but all the fond memories of her will be always there forever. My heartfelt condolences to the family and hope Sumatiji's cheerful memories will guide them through these difficult times.

Anand Natarajan

Oh, Gosh!! This is indeed a sad day for all of us!

My prayers go out to her immediate family. I will always remember her as that tireless, cheerful, wonderful lady who was so sincere at her age, providing us direction and guidance in our CRY/vibha endeavors, or just being around to talk to..

Regards Anand

Srinivas Vemulapalli

It is really shock to me and we all really miss her. Infact I wrote my last email yestereday evening and I was expecting reply from her. She was very prompt and dedicated volunteer. Atlanta chapter really miss her.

Bina Philip

This is really shocking news. Sreekanth, thank you for mentioning doing something both for honoring her dedication to Vibha's work and to express our sadness to her family.

Kiran Nadgir

I have had the privilege to work with her on a few events and I must say that if there was one person who I could say was totally dedicated to Vibha's cause, it was Sumatiji. Vibha has lost its best volunteer.

Sujan Bhattacharya

I am shocked. I met her at her home couple of days ago, gave her my receipts for KhelMela, discussed the ideas of cultural program for Vibha but could not see any sign of her departure so fast. She was encouraging, thoughtful and witty. We lost a dedicated volunteer and we are definitely going to miss her. May her soul rest in peace.

Mehndiratta, Sandeep

I am so sorry to hear about it. I met her thrice only and talked to her few minutes. She was just a gentle person. We should sure do some thing for the family. Sandeep & Komal

Deepak Gowda

I am shocked and saddened by Sumatiji's sudden demise. My prayers are with Sumatiji's family. Deepak

Keshav Kumaran

Sumatiji was one of the pillars of the atlanta action center and was always there for us. I don't think I will ever forget her smiling face and her famous quote "Did you bring your receipt"

Sumatiji- you will be so sorely missed by one and all ! May you rest in peace. Our prayers are with your family.

Ikroop Kaur

I cannot fully believe that Sumatiji is no longer with us. My heartfelt condolences go out to her family. I will always remember her upbeat spirit, her genuine warmth and compassion towards everyone. I'm sure all of us at Vibha will feel a void for a long time to come.

Alka Roy

It doesn’t seem real. She was a wonderful human being, a great contributor, a tireless volunteer, a lover of classical music. I think I met her while or after the HariPrasad Chaurasia concert. I remember sitting next to her at the CRY/Vibha Cricket events. She was full of good stories, good questions, and you could always count on her.

My condolences to her immediate family and her friends.

Deepa

This is really tragic. Sumatiji’s dedication and sincerity to Vibha was a source of inspiration for a lot of volunteers. In fact just this past Saturday, in our first volunteer meeting of the Vibha-Boston chapter, we gave her example to the team as to how she was one of the most dedicated volunteers at Vibha Atlanta. This is a great loss for the Vibha community and the people who had the priviledge to know her.

Shobhit Chugh

I was in shock after reading the news. Though I haven't seen Sumati ji since moving from Atlanta two years ago, I always recall her as a shining example of dedication. Whether anyone else was present at the volunteer meeting or not, you could always count on her. Her willingness to help, her ever present smile and her love for everyone around her will be sorely missed.

Sujal Patel

I open my e-mail to find out such shocking news. I will pray that Sumatiji's family, friends, and more importantly her soul live in peace. Let us all pray for her.

Anurag Goel

This is a huge loss for all of us. A lot of people knew Sumati Ji as a dedicated and reliable volunteer, but few knew that she went to great lengths to keep Vibha Atlanta's finances in running order - she regularly reimbursed volunteer expenses from her personal account, even when she had to wait several days, even weeks, for reimbusement from the national team. One of the most reliable volunteers across all of Vibha's action centers, she was the reason Vibha Atlanta was able to close its accounts on time, every time. Sumati Ji's cheerful and witty disposition lit up all our meetings and events. Always ready to help out with tasks that most volunteers found mundane, she was a constant source of inspiration for me as well as a figure all the younger volunteers could look up to. She will be missed sorely.

Rao Manekar

very shocking and sadening...

She was very 'dedicated' volunteer, she would be present for all the events. Very 'responsible and reliable', maintained Vibha check book.Vibha Atlanta will definitely miss her.

Ashwini Sinha

"This is a devastating news. I had various occasions to work and interact with her. Her friendly, helping nature and always energetic mood was so inspirational. The void created by her sad demise is impossible to fill. We all will miss her heavily."

Jaishree Tikyani Knauff

It was really sad and shocking to hear this news. She was a dedicated to the cause of Vibha and a true inspiration. She will be missed.

Pankaj

Just two days before she remembered to send my expenses check to our volunteer meeting because she could not make it. In fact, she personally went and collected the expenses receipt for me from Global Mall, because I was not able to collect the receipt for a few months. Also, she informed Rohan sternly to not give me the check unless I gave him the final receipt, as if urging me to call her and find out which receipt.

I remembered which receipt and did not call her and it saddens me that I cannot talk to her now. I still have the receipt with me and I have not collected the check from Rohan but I am going to keep it in memory of her.

She was a wonderful and dedicated person and treated me like her own child. Btw, Sumati Ji you still owe me one more check, please come and settle it. I will miss her.

Pankaj

This was indeed shocking and saddening! Sumati was such a pleasant person - I've never ever seen her upset, and she did her volunteer work so very diligently, no matter what the charitable organization was - and always with a smile on her face! We would see her taking walks around our neighborhood, and will miss her immensely. Rather than mourn her passing, I would encourage one and all to celebrate her simple and giving life, from which we all can take inspiration!

Raju Kotak

Sumati and the VIBHA organization are synonymous in Atlanta. Words cannot express how much she will be missed for her dedication and efforts to help everyone in need.

Samrajyam Chandrasekhara Rao

Indeed we were very sad to hear the news of sudden demise of most respected and committed volunteer Smt.Sumathi Mahajan. It is a great loss especially to the Vibha and to the Indian community of Atlanta. We had a chance to see her committed and dedicated voluntary service to the Vibha in our visits to Atlanta. May her soul rest in peace in the laps of almighty.

I request you to pass on this message to the beraved family members and also convey our heartfelt condelence to the family.

Sreenivasa Baddam

It is certainly very sorrowful & shocking news. She is one of the sweetest persons & has helped CRY/Vibha in innumerable circumstances in every way she can. I certainly regret whatever has happened. She is one of the persons who I always look to meet her whenever I am with the whole group. My wishes & prayers for the great soul to rest in peace.

Priti Tatia

Please convey my condolence to the family. I worked with Sumatji when I was a volunteer and I always bumped into her at musical events...she was a wonderful person...

Suchismita Bhunia

I met Sumatiji when I first came to US, Atlanta. I remember I met her in a potluck picnic and she told me you will adjust to this place quickly. The same year I met her in the vibha run. Then we moved and here i got the news. Its really sad and my condolence goes to the family. She was a wonderful person and she would always be remembered.
